With a Poet's Eye -The centerpiece of this program is an unusual setting of the Wallace Stevens poem "13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird." Joseph Ohrt, the conductor at Central Bucks West High School in Doylestown, PA, commissioned 13 living composers to each set one line of the poem. Each movement is less than one minute long, and the pieces progress completely around the Circle of Fifths. It's a tour-de-force featuring beautiful miniatures by some of today's most prominent choral composers.
The rest of the program features a wide variety of selections ranging from Renaissance madrigals and Elizabethan glees to folk songs and beloved classics. The Camerata will perform Morten Lauridsen's beautiful setting of "Sure on This Shining Night" for the first time, along with settings of poetry by Robert Frost, Langston Hughes, John Greenleaf Whittier, William Shakespeare, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., Robert Herrick and William Butler Yeats. Featured composers include Orlando Lassus, Randall Thompson, Orlando Gibbons, Charles Ives, Michael Head and more. You won't want to miss this beautiful and fascinating program of exquisite settings of beautiful texts!
